Club History

The Sackville Chebucto Athletics Club was founded by coach Doug Mitchell in 1976, who prior to that coached with the Sackville Track and Field Club from 1968 to 1975.

Initially the club served young teenage athletes during the summer months but as interest grew the organizers and coaches decided to extend the operation of the club to a year-round training and competitive program.

In 1978 the club became involved with Atlantic Lotto. The club executives negotiated and received a space in the Bedford Place Mall to operate a Lottery Booth. This booth was operated by Chebucto for nearly 40 years.

Club athletes have distinguished themselves at Provincial and National Championships, on Canada Games teams and in International competitions. In 1987 two of our athletes were selected to the Canadian Junior Team and three athletes made the team in 1988. In 1992 Chebucto had five athletes compete at the Olympic Trials.

There have been CIAU medalists as well as a Bronze Medalist at the 2000 National Multiple Events competition.

Always community minded, the club was instrumental in developing first class-facilities in the area. In 1985, the club contributed $30,000 towards the track facilities at Metropolitan Field in Lower Sackville.

There are approximately 3000 Chebucto Athletics alumni. Numerous people involved in the sport of Athletics in Nova Scotia today can trace their coaching tree to Chebucto.
